Bad Taste Recordings and MethLab merge once again to deliver the second volume in their massive MethLab compilation series. Part of a broader push from both crews, this seven-track EP once again showcases an impressive glimpse into the nightmarish, tech-driven void of the darker side of the drum & bass.
Current Value’s “Pelham 123” is the perfect gateway into this alien world, as the straight murderation of his technoid thriller sets the pace for Billain’s twitching beast known as “Metal Jaws.” If you’ve made it this far then the real fun begins, as Optiv & CZA ride the lightning on “Sub Surface” before Disprove, Signal, and Audeka conjure up a lumbering spirit from the deep on their occult-tinged “Ritual.”
As we close in on the final act, Kursa and Faek offer up the shivering nightmarish “Behind This Door” before MachineCode and Disprove’s “Signature” shifts gears into a dreamy, trance-inducing intro that gives way to an industrial-strength crusher of a tune. Keeping with the cinematic vibe of the EP, the narrative eases us into the dark dreamscape of “Samurai” from Audeka and Rawtekk. The Eastern-influenced atmospheres swirl around half-time beats and intricate sound design that marks the perfect closing for the wild ride that MethLab 2 delivers.
