DJ Hybrid’s ‘Mixed Origins’ Takes It Back to the Roots

The depth and breadth of jungle is explored on this ambitious and massive album project from DJ Hybrid. Working his way through everything from ragga, hip-hop, halftime to old-school jump-up, jazz, and drum funk inspired rinseouts, the debut full-length LP from DJ Hybrid is a proper 14-track journey into something much deeper than just a collection of tracks designed to showcase his skills and style.

From the dreamy “Midgar”—that harkens back to those classic Good Looking styled pads and rolling breaks—to straight up speaker busting chest-knockers like “Murder VIP” or “Mix & Blend” there’s something for everyone here, whether you were dancing under the stars in 1993 or holed up in the bassbin in 1999.

This isn’t to say it’s only for the old-time nostalgic crew, as bits like “You First” draw on classic dirty vibes and kung fu samples but bring on a proper stepping workout that has been going down hard across the board. Dutty vibes on “Beyond My Control” and “Blood & Fire” keep it dirty for the dancefloor while ethereal bits like “Katie’s Song” and “Coming Up” make this one a future classic in the making.

Out now so be sure to load it up and prepare to take a little trip down to the roots of where it all began.
