The ever-impressive Oddprophet returns to center stage with Optical Illusions, a monster four-track EP dropping on SKiSM’s Never Say Die: Black Label. While Oddprophet always comes correct with the darkness, this project seems to reveal the peak of the dark powers he is wielding in the studio.
All the cuts grind and bang in all the right places with a proper menacing undertone that hints at the occult-influenced leanings that each track delivers. From the headbanging title cut all the way through to the goosebump-inducing “Phantasm” and anthemic “Riddim Love Song,” there’s no denying that Oddprophet is going all in.
Even so, our favorite cut off the EP has to be the jaw-dropping “Too Clever.” Exotic atmospheres lay the foundation for a mind-bending cinematic sweep to the crescendoing drop. Once the floor falls out from beneath you, Oddprophet keeps the tension high as the whirlwind flex dives headfirst into the shivering core of the tune proper. Orchestral strings turn up the anxiety level and the lumbering beast unleashed in the midst of it all smashes and slams its way to the end with untouchable prowess.
