[Playlist] Jaguar Skills’ Favorite Old-School Hip-Hop Tunes to Mash

The ever-elusive, mysterious, and legendary ninja known as Jaguar Skills continues to drop jaws across the globe with his unique and untouchable style. Whether he’s chopping it up behind the decks as a multi-genre scratch DJ or knocking out the heavy beats in the studio, there’s no doubting that the Viper Recordings stalwart is an absolute legend among those who know.

With the past year one of his strongest to date as a producer, Jaguar Skills has been hitting the bass charts on the regular with his anthemic single “FLY” and full-bore Ready to Rock EP paving the way for his latest hit single in the form of “Shadow King,” a full-on collaborative killer between Jaguar and label boss Futurebound to celebrate the 100th release on the imprint.

Even with his prowess in the studio, there’s no denying that it’s his skills on the decks that get the heart palpitating when his name comes up. Blending, chopping, and mashing disparate genres into a cinematically inclined wild ride, none can test when Jaguar Skills steps up and prepares to smash. With an extra love for his ability to mash up classic hip-hop into the mix, we thought we’d tap the ninja himself for some exclusive insights into his favorite old-school tunes to mash with drum & bass and bass music in the dance. Pull out that pen and paper and bow down to the master—class is in session!

M.O.P. “Ante Up” (Loud, 2000)
“If you want a FULL shut down of the dance, there’s only one thing to draw. ‘Ante Up’ is an ALL time classic. You can chop the f*ck out of the beat and you can grab the a capella and put it over ALL genres and it smashes.”

The Notorious B.I.G. “Warning” (Bad Boy, 1994)
“Everyone knows the start of this and it’s so f*cking dope. Plus it’s a kinda left field choice, too—more of a connoisseur’s choice. You’ll always get crazy props from drawing for this one, plus it’s perfect to mash up with drum & bass!”

Wu Tang Clan “Bring Da Ruckus” (Loud, 1993)
“Loop the start of this and see a mosh pit explode! It’s SO rowdy and SO classic and just an all-around amazing vocal loop that brings the ruckus!”

Wu Tang Clan “C.R.E.A.M.” (Loud, 1993)
“Yo, drop this beat out of nowhere and watch those hands reach for the sky! Perfect to re-set the dance and bring everybody back down to bring them up again. It’s dope, classic and perfect for the mash-up.”

Snoop Doggy Dogg “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?” (Death Row, 1993)
“I like to take the intro from Dr. Dre’s ‘Next Episode’ and then slam it into ‘Who Am I?’—it’s the one-two knock out move. Everyone likes classic Snoop, and when you spin “Who Am I?” it’s a straight up party.”

Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo “Ill Street Blues” (Cold Chillin’, 1992)
“A classic piano loop and my favorite emcee of all time. If you’re not a true hip-hop head you probably won’t know this but it doesn’t matter; drop this and people will move. Perfect to bring the dance down a little, but then mix it in with some new fresh D&B to see people’s brain’s blow up!”
