After a period of relative quiet from the drum & bass legend known as S.P.Y, the vaults are opening up once again as he hits us with what is essentially his next album project in the form of a series of EPs bundled under the Alone in the Dark banner. Released in three-parts with plenty of time to breathe between releases, S.P.Y proves he hasn’t lost his magic touch and, if anything, has elevated the bar once again.
With the first chapter in the series still crushing dancefloors worldwide, Hospital Records drops the second EP on us with some of the darkest cuts on the series. While S.P.Y’s ability to flex on all fronts already well known, it’s when he takes things down the dark and dirty warehouse path that we know we’re in for some of the best he has to offer.
From the aggressive menace of bits like “Termination” and “Shadow Play” on through to the old-school vibes of the vocal-driven “Get Up” or whiplash-inducing “Cold Wave,” S.P.Y is in top form, rolling out the grooves and goosebumps in equal measure. Still, if there’s only one tune to check to see if S.P.Y is capable of scratching that dancefloor itch, check the sick vibes that S.P.Y brings to the fore on “Mind Over Matter.” Featuring the spitfire lyricism of Inja on the vocal tip, this tech-laced number is the perfect bridge towards the third EP in the trilogy on its way before the year is out.
